Personal Statement Session

In this workshop, students will learn about the purpose of the personal statement and things to consider when writing. Brainstorming is an essential part of preparing to write a personal statement. Through an interactive activity, students will begin the brainstorming process by reflecting on their past and current experiences. Advisors will also review common mistakes students make when writing and help students determine what experiences and personal characteristics are important to include in the essay.

Although personal statement workshops will be offered in the spring semester, advisors can assist students in formulating ideas for the personal statement. Students may make an appointment to discuss their motivation, experiences and activities as they relate to content to be shared in the personal statement. Please complete the Personal Statement Brainstorming form to do so.

HEALTH PROFESSIONS RECRUITMENT & EXPOSURE PROGRAM 2013 (HPREP)

HPREPCollegeRecruitment2013

Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Student National Medical Association (SNMA) student group each year coordinates and hosts HPREP.  HPREP aims to provide an added foundation and experience to those students interested in pursuing a career in the health professions, e.g. physician, nurse, physical therapist, or pharmacist.  Students will be able to see and hear minority health professionals discuss issues at the forefront of medicine, as well as have minority healthcare students interact with them on a regular basis.  HRPEP participants will have opportunities rarely experienced by the average minority undergraduate student.  These opportunities will include:

Immersion in the medical school curriculum

Performing basic medical physicals

Personal statement writing, mock interviews, and MCAT workshops

Observing a gross anatomy lab

Mentoring by healthcare students

Information on different health professions and fields of medicine

Application Requirements

Students with Minimum GPA of 2.0

We are looking specifically for students who come from backgrounds that are statistically underrepresented in the health care profession such as African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders.  Nonetheless, all students interested in this program are more than welcome to apply.  This is a very fun program and previous students have really enjoyed it and very informative.   If a student has already participated in the program, they are not eligible to participate another year because the program is not significantly different from year to year.

Dates

The dates for HPREP will be: 01/05, 01/12, 01/19, 02/02, 02/09, 02/16 (Note that we will not have HPREP on 01/26)

9:00 AM – 12:00 pm at the Feinberg Campus in Downtown Chicago

Deadlines

All applications must be postmarked by Nov 30th, 2012. We do prefer online applications.

To access the hard copy applications you can visit our website:  http://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/diversity/programs/campus.html   (right panel)
